Wireless internet has opened avenues for those who do not have access to proper infrastructure pipelines for internet. Traditional technologies like cable and DSL would not be feasible for some remote places. In such cases the wireless internet comes to the rescue. In wireless internet a communication tower beams the data to its subscribers. The radius to which it is beamed would be around 40 miles. Now-a-days more powerful towers are available for wireless internet. If you are away from the nearest tower then the satellite would be only option. Data from the tower is transmitted to the satellite and you would be having a dish like receiver which receives the data from the satellite. From the receiver data is piped to your desktop or laptop.
An 802.11b connection is used to transfer data to your laptop. To be precise the data from the transmission tower goes to your internet receiver that you have at home and from that receiver it is passed to your laptop or desktop. In some remote cases the satellite also comes into the picture.
