FTP, the file transfer protocol works the same way as a web page. An URL is given to the files in the FTP server and the user can download the files using an FTP client or even through the browser. You have to understand the concept of client and server to know how an FTP works. An FTP client is used to either download a file or upload a file to the FTP server. The client / server model is used in the working of the FTP. One of the computers that request the file is the client and the one that serves that file is the server. The file is usually stored in the server. A program called the FTPd (FTP Daemon) will accept the connections from the client and it serves the files that are needed by the client. There are many programs available in the market that can be used as the FTP client.
