When a person is under the influence of hypnosis, they might not be aware of the surroundings and they are focused on a particular incident or topic. It is such a state of consciousness. The meaning of hypnosis is ‘nervous sleep’. This term was coined by James Braid. It is found that during sleep the alpha brain waves are very low. But in hypnosis that alpha brain waves are high even though the patient looks like sleeping. Moreover a sleeping person cannot hear anything whereas a hypnotized person can hear. Studies and research indicate that each and every person has some level of hypnotizability beyond which you can’t make them to become trance. It is not possible to increase or decrease that trance state. A person is called a good subject if they can have high hypnotizability and otherwise they are referred to as a poor subject. The subconscious mind in a person is made use of in hypnosis.
